The TALON 540 team has been in existence for 9 years. The team started out with only a small group of 7 members to over 60 members this year. The TALON team believes that focus on each other, respect to others, the environment, and commitment to the team and community will not only bring success as a team but also as individuals as each grows and develop into better citizens. We believe we are not just building a robot, the robot is building the team. Consequently, team members are very active in other aspects of the team, from public relations to recruitment and rookie training programs. Team members design and implement such activities, with the encouragement and guidance of adult mentors. The goals of these dedicated students are not simply to be successful in competition. Between seasons, students challenge themselves with prototyping various drive trains, as well as through little projects like building t-shirt launching robots for school football games and building miniature PIKSSAC robots to compete against seniors in the Engineering program at Virginia Commonwealth University. Team 540 is essentially a diverse cross-section of Godwin High School students united by their conviction and enthusiasm for robotics. |

Spreading the message of FIRST and giving back to the community is just as important to the students as building robots. Students have reached out through demonstrations and presentations at a variety of venues, from the Greater Richmond Technology Council TechSummit, volunteers at FLL tournament, visitation to middle schools in addition to Legislative Reception to Engineering Explorers and Big Brother Big Sister Duck Races. |

Team 540 is supporting the Maynard Foundation for Childhood Cancer by helping and participating in the foundation’s fundraiser, Jake’s Reindeer Race. Jake Maynard, an eight-year-old cancer survivor, is now an honorary member of Team 540. He and his younger brother will be involved throughout the 2008 build season. |
