VirginiaFIRST is part of the US Foundation for the Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology (FIRST), an organization founded in 1989 in Manchester, New Hampshire by inventor Dean Kamen.  Its stated purpose includes inspiration of young people to be science and technology leaders through interesting challenges and exciting sports-like competitions.

VirginiaFIRST relies on sponsors and hundreds of educators, mentors, and volunteers to provide these opportunities and administer a variety of FIRST programs.  VirginiaFIRST was incorporated as a 501(c)3 in 2007.
